This summer the faculty and staff of Maitripa College would like to send a message of love and empathy around the world by offering Classical Tibetan online and tuition free as a non-credit option for non-degree seeking students. For-credit options will also be available.

Taught by Professor Bill Magee (of Maitripa College and the UMA Institute), this summer we will offer a foundational introductory course for all those wishing to translate or to engage in research on a scholarly level.  The focus of this eight-week summer course will be on gaining the ability to pronounce and read paradigmatic Tibetan sentences, then read and debate in Tibetan the early chapters of Pur-bu-jok's Collected Topics. This text introduces logical reasoning within a framework of Dharmakirti's  Commentary on Dignaga's Compendium of Valid Cognition and the Buddhist Sutra School system of tenets.

Due to the limitations of interactive online classes, this course will be restricted to twenty participants. No prior knowledge of Tibetan language is required. However, the instructor's permission must be given before students are allowed to register for the course; permission is obtained by completing the application form - available at www.maitripa.org April 15, 2020.

Please note: Although state law prohibits Oregon's Colleges and Universities from awarding free college credit, scholarship assistance will be available for Maitripa College degree program students with financial need; please contact program@maitripa.org for inquiries.

Full details on this exciting opportunity will be available
