Musician Spotlight:

Lead musician He Yi 何怡 is a soprano and guqin (Chinese zither) player who studied Chinese traditional opera in her childhood. She received a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree with honors from China’s premier music school, the China Conservatory in Beijing. After her graduation from the Conservatory, she spent a substantial amount of time in the United States and Europe, focusing primarily on Western opera. The contrast with the music of her native culture sparked in her a growing interest in traditional Chinese music, particularly in music with a philosophical significance. After her return to China, she decided to concentrate on the singing of guqin songs, one of the oldest art forms of China. In November 2015, she released an album, “Wind from the south - Guqin Songs.” He Yi has toured widely, performing over 1000 concerts in Asia, Europe and North America. She is the Art Ambassador at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, USA, and an expert with the China Guqin Song Conference. As a scholar, she has been invited to give lectures at the National Centre for the Performing Arts of China, Leiden University of the Netherlands and other academic institutions.
