We are pleased to share a recent interview with Professor Alfred Kaszniak, Sensei and guiding teacher of Upaya Zen Center in Tucson, in conversation with Dr. Wendy Hasenkamp on the Mind & Life podcast. Dr. Hasenkamp is a neuroscientist, meditator, and Science Director at the Mind & Life Institute, an organization that supports continuing dialogue between contemplative traditions, science, philosophy, and the humanities.
In this podcast, Prof. Kaszniak and Dr. Hasenkamp cover several topics, including:
- research on meditation, emotion, and attention;
- how our view of self impacts what seems relevant to us;
- cognitive effort and emotion regulation;
- attention and early emotion/affective tone;
- shifting out of the conceptual mind;
- the relationship of attention and emotion;
- free will vs. free won't (meditation as inhibition);
- increasing access to contemplative ideas and practices;
- mind as process, interaction, and context—and what that means for science;
- and the value of interdisciplinary dialogue and the "in-between" spaces.
