Much has been happening at the Center for Buddhist Studies!

On May 2nd, Dr. John Kieschnick of Stanford University was our speaker for the Inaugural presentation of the Lingyin Buddhist Studies Lecture series and he gave a great presentation on his topic: The Literal and Metaphorical Demons in Chinese Buddhism.  His presentation considered the metaphorical associations with “demons of the mind” in 16thcentury texts by Zhuhong and what role demons played in the pursuit of self-perfection.  His presentation was received with much interest and appreciation from all those who were in attendance.

Four of our students were chosen for awards by the Maitreya Culture and Education Foundation in Hong Kong for their essays on Buddhist Compassion.  Congratulations to Bi Youteng, Yao Huiqiao, Liu Yi, & Rob Lisak.  Liu Yi and Rob were invited along with Dr. Wu Jiang and Dean Durand of the UA College of Humanities to present and attend in Hong Kong on May 4th.

With much gracious support from Lingyin Monastery in Hangzhou, Lixia Dong & Jinhui Wu were awarded $10, 000 graduate study awards, and nine undergraduates were given awards to help support their research this summer in Hangzhou.  Ouyang Nan was also given an award by Lingyin for her research paper on Bodhisattvas in late imperial China.
