Jinhui Wu, doctoral candidate and research associate of the Department of East Asian Studies, was recently awarded the 2019-2020 College of Humanities Graduate Student Research Grant at the University of Arizona. Jinhui works on literature and religion in late imperial China. The initial stage of her recent research, titled “Monks, Literati and Émigrés: Life and Identities of Chinese Scholars who “Escaped into Zen” in Japan During the Early Modern Era”—has been selected for support at the amount of $4,540. This project delves into the complexities of identities of Chinese scholars who “escaped into Zen” (becoming Buddhist monks) in Japan during the early modern era. Particular attention will be paid to their effort in turning Japan into their homeland in the entanglement of migration, transition, and multi-identities.
