Professor Sueki’s lecture will examine Buddhism in the Early Modern period in Japan. Formerly, Buddhism in this period (predominantly the 17th through the 19th centuries) was thought to be in a state of decline. The truth of the matter is that it was actually a time of great innovation. This is particularly the case with the mid-Early Modern period when a critical perspective based on textual research developed. Within that period, Hōtan, while based in the Kegon school, developed incisive criticism of the doctrines of the various schools of contemporaneous Japanese Buddhism. Focusing on Hôtan, below we will examine the meaning and development of Buddhist thought during the mid-Early Modern Period.
Professor Sueki attended graduate school at Tokyo University and later served as professor at the same university. Upon retiring from the University of Tokyo, he became professor at the International Research Center for Japanese Studies. Currently he holds emeritus status at both of these institutions.
